Web Shoppers Spend Spend Spend…

Web Shoppers Spend £107BN
Online shoppers in Britain have broken through the £100 billion barrier for the first time. The total this year will hit £107 billion, driven by the spread of smart phones and tablets making buying on the World Wide Web easier. A third of all purchases are now made online.

Barclaycard said that the amount spent by online consumers is rising at 11% on average per year. Its research shows that music downloads are the fastest growing sector, with sales more than doubling over the past year.

Another poll by the Money Advice Service has found that Internet Shoppers typically hoard more than £100 worth of goods which they have never used since purchase.

A survey for Google found that more than 30% of Britons have now made a purchase using a smartphone, the highest in Europe. More than two thirds of UK residents now use such a device according to the Google research. This growth of business is set to continue with an ever increasing number of shoppers continuing to use the Internet Search engines to locate a product or service, and then order the product or service online.

SEO: How Your Future Clients Find You Online

SEO: How Your Future Clients Find You Online
A quick question for all the business owners out there: does your business have a website? If not, there’s a great deal of potential business that you are likely missing out on.

Maybe you think your business is doing just fine with people coming in off the street or because you paid for an advert in your local newspaper, but consider this: more and more people today are carrying a tiny little computer that they call a smart phone in their pocket or purse, and with this tiny little computer they are seeking – and getting – instant gratification not only in terms of who has recently texted them or posted another cute cat video on Facebook, but also when problems arise which must be dealt with swiftly. Let’s say you own an auto repair shop and a driver from another town has just broken down and doesn’t know where to go for repairs.

The unfortunate out-of-towner could simply find out where the nearest shop is, or he could do a quick Internet search from his smart phone to find one that others recommend and that ranks high among local auto shops in search engine results.

Exactly how do businesses come to rank high in search results, you may ask? Simple: it’s through Search Engine Optimisation or SEO. Smart business owners use this form of Internet marketing to attract new clients in a manner that word-of-mouth advertising and traditional adverts simply cannot.

By providing online content related to your products and services and using keywords and key phrases that are likely to draw potential clients to your business’s website, you can see your revenues grow exponentially by establishing your company as one that others in the online community can trust.

Direct Submit is dedicated to providing SEO and Internet marketing services to businesses in Newcastle upon Tyne, the Northeast and elsewhere in the UK. We work with individual companies to produce substantive online content which will increase traffic to your website in a matter which fosters trust among potential clients and at a much more reasonable cost than other forms of advertising.

et our knowledge of Internet marketing and SEO help to make your business more profitable than you ever thought possible. For more information, call us today on 0845 272 2350 or visit www.directsubmit.co.uk

eBay Warns Customers to Change Passwords after Database Hacked

eBay Warns Customers to Change Passwords after Database Hacked
EBay have asked customers to change their passwords after a database containing personal information was cracked by hackers, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The database contained encrypted passwords and was compromised in late February into March. The hacked database contained customer information including phone numbers, birth dates, and email addresses. It did not include financial information, the online auction site said. “Cyber attackers compromised a small number of employee log-in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay’s corporate network,” the company said in a statement. EBay has seen “no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats.”

The breach was discovered about two weeks ago, according to eBay, leading to a probe that identified the hacked database.

EBay users will be contacted by the company on Wednesday asking them to change their passwords. A notice asking users to change their eBay passwords was first posted on the company website for PayPal, which is owned by eBay and handles its online payments.

Users who use the same password on eBay and other websites should change their passwords on all sites, the company said.

PayPal released a statement saying that an investigation has not uncovered any evidence that information for its customers was hacked. “PayPal customer and financial data is encrypted and stored separately, and PayPal never shares financial information with merchants, including eBay,” PayPal said.

Politician and Paedophile ask Google to ‘be forgotten’

Politician and Paedophile ask Google to ‘be forgotten’
Google has received fresh takedown requests after a European court ruled that an individual could force it to remove “irrelevant and outdated” search results, the BBC has learned.

An ex-politician seeking re-election has asked to have links to an article about his behaviour in office removed. A man convicted of possessing child abuse images has requested links to pages about his conviction to be wiped. And a doctor wants negative reviews from patients removed from the results.

Google itself has not commented on the so-called right-to-be-forgotten ruling since it described the European Court of Justice judgement as being “disappointing”. Nor has it released any figures about the number of takedown requests received since Tuesday.

The original case was brought by a Spanish man who complained that an auction notice of his repossessed home on Google’s search results had infringed his privacy.

The ruling surprised many because it contradicted the advice of the European Union’s advocate general who said last year that search engines were not obliged to honour such requests.

EU Commissioner Viviane Reding described the decision as “a clear victory for the protection of personal data of Europeans” but others are concerned about the consequences that it will have for free speech.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has criticised the ruling, calling it “astonishing” while free speech advocates at The Index on Censorship said the court’s ruling “should send chills down the spine of everyone in the European Union who believes in the crucial importance of free expression and freedom of information”.  “The court has said that an individual’s desires outweigh society’s interest in the complete facts around incidents,” it added.

Marc Dautlich, a lawyer at Pinsent Masons, said that search engines might find the new rules hard to implement. “If they get an appreciable volume of requests what are they going to do? Set up an entire industry sifting through the paperwork?” he asked. “I can’t say what they will do but if I was them I would say no and tell the individual to contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.”

Although the judgement refers specifically to search engines and states that only the links to information, rather than the information itself, be removed from the net, some news organisations have seen a rise in the number of people asking to have articles removed since the ruling.

Benefits of Internet Marketing

Some of the Benefits of Internet Marketing
Your business has probably used several marketing approaches including some of the following; billboards, newspaper adverts, promotional flyers, and maybe if your commercial marketing budget allows – radio or television commercials.  However, for many businesses the use of this type of conventional marketing has been out of bounds, as it typically comes at a steep price and requires a significant budget.

So why consider Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) as part of your marketing? The Internet is now an integral part of many consumers’ daily lives when searching for a product or service and if you aren’t taking advantage of online marketing yourself, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to help your company take on new clients or customers and increase your ROI (Return on Investment).

The internet market is a vast and increasingly large market place that in recent years has been proven time and again to not only be as beneficial to your company as traditional marketing, but very probably even more so. For any company, online marketing is – or should be, an integral and very important component of their marketing success.

As more people are becoming aware of the many benefits associated with internet marketing and becoming ever more technologically savvy, then web marketing has the ability to transcend country lines and can promote your business services or products to virtually any part of the world. Open 24 / 7, this type of marketing should be considered as a ‘must have’ for any business and an essential marketing tool.

There are a number of advantages and potential benefits to making use of Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to help promote your business. It is today recognised as one of the most effective and efficient forms of marketing available and has seen unprecedented growth in recent years.

The following are a few of the possible benefits when using effective Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO):

• This type of marketing has become much more effective and efficient when measured against the effectiveness of meeting the end user’s eyes.

• Internet advertisements can reach across the entire nation, or even the world.  Traditional advertising usually focuses on a more local level.

• A great benefit of this type of marketing is that your products and services will meet your consumers’ eyes much sooner and in a very concentrated manner.

• It allows ‘season specific’ offers to be promoted quickly and easily, for example seasonal goods or services.

• Improved communication between the service provider and customer.

• Internet marketing is considered to be one of the most cost-effective marketing techniques available, especially since it is usually much more effective than traditional marketing and delivers a better ROI.

These are just a few of the benefits available from internet marketing and effective SEO.

As with many other forms of traditional marketing, internet marketing can often not be done in-house. Many companies have tried and failed.  Internet marketing requires a certain expertise that many spend years acquiring, and hiring an SEO / Online Marketing service may be a long-term investment that can usually guarantee a massive return.

Submitting To Web Based Directories?

Benefits Of Submitting To Web Based Directories?
Increasing traffic to your website and ranking in the major search engines is probably one of your major targets, at least as far as your online business and website is concerned. A great way to increase the level of traffic and rankings in the search engines is to submit your website to the directories.

Submitting to directories is certainly a good idea if you are interested in increasing the number of links directed toward your webpage. As you may already know, the more inbound links you have then the higher search engines are likely to rank your webpage (subject to the quality and relevance of the links). This is one of the most notable benefits of submitting your website to the directories because your site will receive many back links and carry a higher weight. As a result, your site will potentially be ranked higher in the search engine results and have more links for people to click on and end up at your site.

So what is Directory submission? It is the process where you submit your website tp online directories under relevant categories according to the industry nad market sector. This can be done manually or by using automated software, however, automated software cannot guarantee that submissions are done in the right categories, nor can it determine a quality link directory. Be aware though that some cheap SEO service providers offer submissions in bulk – literally thousands,  but have no clue which directories are worth linking to. Thus, not identifying quality directories and not completing website submissions manually can lead to a bad link profile.

Another benefit your site will enjoy by being listed in a directory is increased credibility. The reason being part of a directory increases credibility is because an actual person must review your site for quality content before it is listed in a directory. Because of this, when your site is listed in a directory web searchers immediately know your website provides relevant information and will be more likely to pay you a visit.

These benefits of submitting to directories can help you with achieving your ultimate goal, an increase in traffic to your website. Go ahead and start submitting to directories today and increase your links on the web as well as your credibility and enjoy the extra traffic and ranking.

The Right Keywords for your Business

Selecting the Right Keywords for your Business
One of the most important – and often glossed over – tasks you should do when researching and creating your list of keywords you want your website to rank well in the major Search Engines for. Keyword research is not too difficult and there are several online tools (free and fee based) that will you in this process. So what should you be doing? Here’s a summary of the basic process involved:

Brainstorm the Keywords to use.
Brainstorm and write down a list of keywords and phrases that describe your products and services. Crucially important, yet often missed by web managers, is to include the keywords you think your customers might use when searching for you or your competitors. Another useful approach is to ask some of your customers what they might type into the Search Engines such as Google or Bing if they were searching for the products and services your business offers. We would also suggest it good practice to include brand and business names.

Include any Known Keywords Successes
To your target list of keywords and phrases add any keywords or phrases that you know or recognise which currently brings qualified traffic and business to your website. Where can you get this information? Well, ask your employees, ask your customers and, assuming you have access to web analytics such as Google Analytics (free) or other website analytics software – you should be able to identify these key phrases here.

Research the Best keywords for your Project
Now use your list of key phrases and, perhaps by using a free keyword tool, try and identify those key phrases which will work well for you. Using the likes of the Google keyword tool, you should be able to note those key phrases your potential customers really do use and type into the Search engines to locate the products and services your are looking to promote.

Online tools such as the Google AdWords Keyword Tool provides:

  • Keyword data by specific countries & territories
  • Search volumes and trends
  • Competition levels for key phrases

There are several other keyword tools available to help you identify the right key phrases for your project and these include: Bing (free), Word tracker (free and paid), Word stream (free and paid), and Keyword Discovery (free and paid).

When you’re finished your key phrase research then you should end up with a clear and relevant list of keywords / key phrases to use together with their local monthly search volume.

Finalise your list of Keyword Targets
By now you should now have a good list of keywords you want your business to use on the web pages you want to be found for, and remember that you can set up a specific set of key phrases for each individual page in your website.

Add these key phrases to your respective pages and remember it may be, for example when creating a ‘landing page’ for an AdWords campaign, to that you need to build a new page based around a specific phrase(s).

You should note that when populating your web pages with these phrases that you should always write copy for the end user, not specifically just for the Search engines. Keyword / key phrase density refers to the number of times a phrase is included in the content on a page. Repeating the phrase too often may well be considered spam by the likes of Google and should be avoided.

Good quality, relevant and well written content – aimed at the site visitor – should be the order of the day.

Tracking your Rankings
Keep an eye on your Search engine rankings for a key phrase and help direct your strategic and tactical efforts, which should also enable you to refine and update your targeted key phrases. For example if you find that you have a selection of relatively low competition keywords ranking in positions  3–10, then the chances are that pushing some great content out that links to those pages will give those pages the boost they need to get to the top.
