Forecast says SEO Related Spending Worth $80 Billion by 2020

Forecast says SEO Related Spending Worth $80 Billion by 2020
Report from Borrell Associates argues “marketing services” spending in US is much larger than advertising. Local media forecaster Borrell Associates has attempted to capture the totality of spending on “digital marketing services” in the US. Borrell argues that “businesses will shell out an estimated $613 billion in DMS” in 2016, an amount many times larger than “ad spending.”

Digital marketing services here includes ads but extends to spending on presence management, PR, listings management, content creation, reputation monitoring, app development, email and beyond. These services are broadly captured in the chart above, breaking down the market by spending category (for 2016).

The report unpacks and discuss each category in more detail. In particular, Borrell says that 87.5 percent of “online marketing support” reflected above is SEO-related spending. It asserts that total SEO spending will be just over $65 billion this year, growing to nearly $80 billion by 2020.

The numbers in this report are massive and may cause some skepticism. Regardless, much more money is being spent on marketing-related digital services that don’t involve media buying than there is on advertising, which falls somewhere between $200 to $300+ billion in the US.

Local SEO to Help Promote your Business
Are you looking to expand your customer base or hoping to raise the profile of your company to a local audience? How many potential customers now open Yellow Pages? Not many is the probable answer, with most house owners now reaching for the laptop or tablet device.

Getty Images Accuses Google in Competition Row

Getty Images Accuses Google in Competition Row
Photo agency Getty Images says it will file a competition lawsuit with the EU against Google, adding to a long list of European cases against the company.  US-based Getty argues that changes to Google’s picture search promote piracy and give the tech giant unfair advantages in traffic and advertising.

Google already faces charges over breaching EU competition laws. The company has in the past dismissed allegations it has used its dominant position to stifle competition.

Getty Images says Google is displaying pictures in its search results that takes away traffic that would otherwise go to Getty’s own website. The photo agency argues that because image consumption is immediate, once an image is displayed in large format by Google, there is little reason for the users to continue to the original source site of a given picture they are viewing.

“These changes have allowed Google to reinforce its role as the internet’s dominant search engine, maintaining monopoly over site traffic, engagement data and advertising spend,” Getty said in a press release.  “This has also promoted piracy, resulting in widespread copyright infringement, turning users into accidental pirates.”

Getty said it represented more than 200,000 photo journalists, content creators and artists worldwide who depend on being paid for their work.

Recognising Ads in Google’s Result

Recognising Ads in Google’s Result
According to Search Engine Watch, around half of adults are unable to recognise ads in Google’s search results, according to a survey. This surprising statistic comes from Ofcom’s Adults’ media use and attitudes report, released this month. While I’ve seen studies suggesting that many people don’t know the difference between paid and organic ads, that 50% could look at a set of results like those below and still not spot them seems bizarre.

For Ofcom’s study, ‘adults who use search engines’ were shown a picture of the SERPs for ‘walking boots’. This is what the SERP looks like now, but the study was carried out in 2015, so the shopping results were not there at that time. As the study says:

“Their attention was drawn to the first three results at the top of the list, which were distinguished by an orange box with the word ‘Ad’ written in it. They were then prompted with three options and asked whether any of these applied to these first three results.”

To clarify the results, 60% identified them as paid links, while 49% identified them only as paid ads, i.e. they selected only the correct answer. Ofcom also split the results out between newer and more established internet users. Newer users in this case are defined as those who first went online less than five years ago. There were 160 newer users surveyed, and 1,113 older users.

In a nutshell: newer users were less likely to identify that the results with the yellow ad label were indeed paid results. 34% of newer and 51% of established users gave only the correct answer.

Facebook’s News Feed Algorithm

Facebook’s News Feed Algorithm
Facebook is going beyond the basic signals of liking, commenting, and sharing to now factor in viewing time as a ranking signal. Previously, Facebook had factored in reading time as a ranking signal, as well as bounce rate, but this week’s viewing time update is a bit different.

facebookimageBased on the data collected by individual users, Facebook will now make an attempt to predict how long people will spend viewing a piece of content. This will be based on how long you have spent viewing other types of content in the past.

Facebook will then rank the content, prioritizing the content it believes you will spend the most time looking at.

With this update, Facebook says ultimately you will see more articles that you’ll be interested in reading. The company says this new ranking signal will not take into account Instant Articles as a factor, it will only take into account how long a person spends viewing content regardless of type. Facebook snuck in another update with this announcement which could have an impact on Pages. According to user data, Facebook says people like to see posts from variety of sources. In other words, they don’t want to see posts from the same Pages all the time.

Going forward Facebook will try to diversify the sources of posts in people’s News Feed by not having too many posts from the same page put together in a row.

Will this update affect your Page? Facebook had this to say. “We anticipate that most Pages won’t see any significant changes. Some Pages might see a small increase in referral traffic, and some Pages might see minor decreases.”

So your mileage may vary with this update, as always it always comes down to quality of content. Good quality, shareable content usually ends up getting seen

Google Toolbar PageRank officially Goes

Google Toolbar PageRank officially Goes
A month or so after Google told us they would be removing the 1-to-10 PageRank scores from the Google toolbar, they removed it this past Friday. Google told us they would be removing PageRank scores from the Google Toolbars last month and they have now has finally and fully cut the data from the Toolbar and any tool that tries to fetch that score.

There are dozens of reports across the web of people asking over the weekend where their PageRank has gone. Well, their PageRank still exists, but the Toolbar version of that PageRank is gone, gone forever.

It has been years since Google updated the PageRank scores in their Google Toolbar, and Google has been trying to demote the importance of PageRank over those years, as well. Last month, Google told us they would officially remove the 1 to 10 scores from their Toolbar feed and that it would go dark in the coming weeks. Well, this past Friday, April 15, 2016, it went dark.
