Search Engine Optimisation
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of making your website or web page search engine friendly and SEO Consultants are there to help website owners attract traffic and make a website’s ranking higher in the search engine results. A competent SEO consultant will be able to offer advice on methods to help improve a website for the search engines. For example, website structure & navigation, keywords placement and Meta tag construction being just some of the variables that may be advised upon.

Unethical SEO & Black Hat Techniques
Only use ethical methods to improve / optimise website pages. Search engines can easily pick up on typically used black hat techniques including keyword stuffing, hidden content and duplicate content.

Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing is the practice of loading a webpage (including met tags) with keywords in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google’s search results.

Duplicate Content
Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across websites / domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. This is highly frowned on as this tries to stuff the search engines with the same content over and over instead of providing fresh or unique content.

Hidden Content
Hidden content comes in many guises but the basic principle is that within the code used within the website there will be content stuffed with keywords, which is ‘hidden’ in an effort to fool the search engines into giving the website a higher profile for a key phrases.

There are numerous other black hat techniques which should be avoided, cloaking and doorway pages to name but two and, for those of you interested in finding out more, a search in Google will reveal many thousands of informative websites. Those who use black hat techniques, if caught by the Search Engines, may face some serious consequences, with websites usually being banned from the Search Engine listings.
