Google Says AI-Generated Content Must Be Fact-Checked Before Publishing
Google has updated its guidance on using generative AI content on websites, adding a stronger warning for publishers that rely on AI to create content.
The company now explicitly advises website owners to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing it.
Google emphasizes just how important this step is, stating: “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content.”

The reason is straightforward: AI-generated content can contain factual errors, even when it appears confident and authoritative.
Google explains that generative AI models don’t actually retrieve facts in the traditional sense. Instead, they predict likely sequences of words based on patterns learned from their training data. As a result, AI-generated responses can sometimes include inaccurate or fabricated information—commonly referred to as hallucinations.
For publishers, the message is clear: using AI to produce content doesn’t eliminate the need for human oversight. Before anything generated by AI goes live, it should be carefully reviewed, fact-checked, and edited to ensure that the information is accurate and trustworthy.
The update reinforces Google’s broader emphasis on the quality and reliability of content published on the web. AI can help speed up the content creation process, but human review remains an essential part of publishing responsibly.
Google added that they updated the help documentation to “get our documentation in sync with our presentations we use at our developer events.”
